Ellie's Story

When one of our dedicated Connie's Crew members, Ulla, found Ellie, a baby Muscovy duck, by the river, she found she was exhausted and weak. Brought to our sanctuary for examination, we discovered that Ellie had only one leg. Where her other leg should have been, there was just a tiny, pointy stump a few millimeters long. Despite having a hip joint, the leg itself was missing.

At the time, we had a Muscovy duck named Tilly who was incredibly broody. She refused to leave her nesting spot for more than about 5 minutes a day, just enough time for a quick bite and swim before returning to her nest. We had removed her eggs to discourage breeding, as we believe there are already so many animals in need of homes.

We decided to see if Tilly would accept Ellie as her own. Placing Ellie in a small enclosure with Tilly, we were overjoyed to see Tilly immediately pull Ellie underneath her body, embracing her new role as a mother.

A few days later, another baby duck was found abandoned at the same river. We decided to introduce this new duckling to Tilly as well, and once again, she didn't hesitate to welcome the baby under her protective wings. It was truly a heart-melting moment.

Tilly's family continued to grow when a local vet asked if we could take in two more abandoned ducklings. Now, Ellie has not only found a loving mother in Tilly but also three siblings to grow up with. Despite her disability, Ellie is thriving. She hops around and can move quickly when needed, adapting beautifully to life with one leg.

Ellie's story is a testament to the power of compassion and the incredible bonds that can form between animals. Your support helps us continue to provide care for special needs animals like Ellie who can live full lives if provided with the support they need. Please consider sponsoring Ellie to help us give her the best life possible.
