Connie's Story
Connie's journey to our sanctuary is nothing short of miraculous. Her story began when a goanna attacked her mother's nest, destroying all the eggs. As part of our usual practice, we collect eggs to feed back to our animals, providing them with essential protein, fats, and calcium. However, fate had different plans for Connie.
The morning after the attack, we found a lone egg just outside the nest. When we cracked it to feed back to the ducks, we were astonished to see blood – a clear sign of life within. Immediately, we took action to save this tiny potential duckling. We carefully wrapped the egg in warm, damp cotton wool and placed it under a heat lamp, though we held little hope for its survival.
That night, an unexpected power outage forced us to improvise. The egg was tucked into one of our founder's shirts for warmth. To our amazement, Connie hatched in the middle of the night, defying all odds.
Our founders, Samara and Toni, took on the responsibility of hand-raising Connie, forming an incredibly special bond with her. However, they were concerned about Connie's well-being when it came time for her to join the flock, knowing that ducks naturally form strong attachments.
In a stroke of serendipity, we were able to rescue another baby duck named Jamie. Connie and Jamie quickly became inseparable friends, easing the transition for Connie and providing her with a companion of her own kind. Together they have spent years being naughty with Connie leading Jamie astray all the time!
Connie's remarkable story of survival and friendship exemplifies the unexpected joys and challenges we face in animal rescue. Her presence at our sanctuary is a testament to the power of compassion and the resilience of life.
